"What" question asks for information about something:


Form: What + am/is/are + Subject


Singular Subject:   What is this?

Plural Subject:  What are these?


Note: We don't use yes or no in the answer. We just give some information:

What is your name?

My name is John.


What is this?

It is a book.

What is in your bag?

It is a small cat.

What are those?

They are my books.

What are these?

These are pencils.
